Captain Freeman receives orders to travel to the Pakled Planet and negotiate a cease fire with the dumbest aliens in the galaxy. Somehow, the mission becomes a situation about helmets, hostages, and claims for asylum. Or is it a case of espionage? Meanwhile, Tendi, Rutherford, Mariner, and Boimler find themselves assigned to Anomaly Consolidation Duty. The task is to collect dangerous science research matter from terminated projects and prepare them to be shipped to a facility where they can be properly be disposed. Boimler is persuaded by a clique of redshirts to get out of the duty. Led by Ensign Casey, this group of ambitious officers are bound by their desire to be promoted to a command position.
