Before we jump into the third and final season of Star Trek: Picard, Addell and I thought we would bring you a special episode looking back at the best episodes of Star Trek in 2022. With the help of a few listeners we came to a consensus and narrow it down to ten favorites with one honorable mention. We’re also going to include several of our listeners comments on their favorite episodes. Following that, we’ll share what we’re hoping from Picard this season. Star Trek: Lower Decks S3, E1 – “Grounded”

“Grounded,” Star Trek: Lower Deck’s Season Three opener, picked up the cliffhanger from last season: Captain Freeman’s impending trial for the destruction of Pakled Planet. With the Cerritos impounded in dry dock, the crew stuck on Earth, scattered and confused. The senior officers refuse to talk to the press, and the lower deckers feel helpless, especially Freeman’s daughter.

A Tribute to Nichelle Nichols: 1932-2022

Today, Addell and Gary wanted to take a moment to pay their respects and reflect on the passing of Nichelle Nichols.

Actress Nichelle Nichols, the original Lt. Nyota Uhura, passed away on the evening of July 30, 2022. Gary and Addell took a moment to examine the remarkable life of this amazing woman. This special tribute episode of Age of Discovery will include an overview of Nichols’ formative years; her early career as a dancer, singer, and actor; the state of television during the 1960s; the impact of her portrayal of Uhura; her life after Star Trek, and finally, her legacy. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds S1, E2 – “Children of the Comet”

The second episode, “Children of the Comet” was another entertaining adventure for this prequel series. It introduced us to a new alien species, provided new background information for a character we’ve known for 56 years, and showed us a Starfleet captain struggling with an ancient debate: Do we live our lives under the control of free will or divine will? Although the main conflict was wrapped up by the end, we did a glimpse of some story elements that might play out over the rest of the season. In honor of Kenneth Mitchell and how both he and his character Aurelio managed living with a genetic defect, I wanted to take a look at how Star Trek has addressed special needs throughout the various tv series. The depictions have changed depending upon the prevailing attitude at the times. You can chart the changes in how society has addressed the subject by how the subject has been addressed in Star Trek.
