A Federation research probe malfunctions and overheats, drifting across the border into Klingon territory within the Mat’Aar system. Wanting to avoid an interstellar incident, Captain Pike dispatches an away team under the command of newly promoted Commander Una Chin-Riley, accompanied by Dr. M’Benga and Ensign Uhura, to quietly retrieve or repair the probe. On the planet Mat’Aar 12, Una becomes the central figure in a high-stakes struggle when she is mistaken for a local resistance leader. Pitted against an oppressive Klingon occupying force, Una navigates political and military dangers on the ground and within the underground movement.
